After the ceremony,
somewhere worth gathering

A christening, or a baptism, or a naming day, is one of the gentler celebrations in family life. It's not about scale or spectacle. It's about gathering the people who matter, sharing a meal, and marking a quiet but important moment together.

Gisborne Bar & Bistro hosts christening lunches, baptism celebrations, and naming day gatherings at Gisborne Golf Club in the Macedon Ranges, 45 minutes from Melbourne CBD via the Calder Freeway. Our venue is set up for the kind of relaxed, daytime family celebration where grandparents can sit comfortably, parents can actually enjoy the meal, and children have space to be themselves.

The catering is handled in partnership with Harvest & Soul, a Macedon Ranges providore and catering team with more than two decades of regional event experience.

Christenings, baptisms, naming days — and everything in between

Families come to us with all kinds of arrangements for their child's celebration.

Traditional christenings and baptisms

Most families hold the church service in their local parish, then bring family and friends to Gisborne Bar & Bistro for the lunch afterwards. We're happy to be the "after-the-ceremony" venue.

Naming days and secular celebrations

Considered, social, generous. Share-style banquets and group dinners are the most-requested format.

Combined ceremonies and receptions

Some families choose to hold both the ceremony and the celebration in one place. While we don't host the religious component, we can accommodate a brief secular ceremony or naming moment within the venue, followed by a relaxed lunch.

Whatever your family's tradition (or lack of one), we'll shape the day to suit it.

Christening Lunch Packages

Christening celebrations work best at lunch, natural light, leisurely pace, and a format that suits guests of every age. Here are the options our families return to most often.

Intimate Family Christening Lunch

Best for: Close family and godparents, 20–50 guests
A relaxed, sit-down two or three-course set menu lunch with table service. Quiet enough for conversation across generations, generous enough to feel like a celebration. Ideal for the immediate family + godparents + closest friends.

Exclusive Venue Hire

Best for: Larger family celebrations, 100–150 guests
The whole venue, just for your family. Full venue hire with custom menu planning, dedicated event staff, and the space for children to be children without anyone minding.

Share-Style Family Christening Lunch

Best for: Extended family and friends, 50–100 guests
Family-style sharing menus brought to the centre of every table, perfect for the celebration where everyone gets up, swaps seats, and catches up with cousins they haven't seen in years.

Note on package details: We tailor every christening lunch to suit the family; menu, timing, format, and any specific dietary or religious requirements. Speak with our events team and we'll build the day around what you have in mind.

A menu that works for every guest

Christening menus need to work harder than most. Grandparents prefer something familiar. Children want something they'll actually eat. Adults want something memorable. Vegetarians, vegans, and guests with dietary needs all need to feel properly looked after, not left with an afterthought plate.

Our christening menus are built around what the Macedon Ranges does best: seasonal produce, regional growers, and dishes that feel celebratory without being intimidating. Set menus, share-style banquets, and tailored options for exclusive venue hire are all available.

The catering sits in the hands of Harvest & Soul, a Macedon Ranges providore and catering team with over twenty years of regional event experience. Children's menus, dietary accommodations, and any specific religious dietary requirements are handled as part of our standard service — not as a special request.

A venue that welcomes the whole family

The little things matter at christenings. Families travelling in from out of town, grandparents who'd rather not navigate stairs, prams that need somewhere sensible to sit, children who need a moment outside, and parents who'd genuinely like to eat their lunch warm.

We've thought about all of it. Our venue is open and well-lit, with comfortable seating for older guests, easy access throughout, and ample free parking right at the entrance, no long walks with a baby in a capsule. The golf course grounds give children a safe, contained outdoor space if they need a moment to themselves. The pace of service is unhurried, so parents can actually sit and eat.

It's the small details that turn a christening lunch from "fine" into "actually lovely."
